How to Read BSR: The Complete Guide

BSR — Best Sellers Rank — is the single number Amazon updates hourly to reflect how well a product sells relative to everything else in its category. Once you understand how it moves, you can reverse-engineer daily sales for any book you research.

What BSR actually measures

BSR is not an absolute sales number — it’s a rank. A BSR of 5,000 in Books means this title is currently outselling 99%+ of books on Amazon. The rank is recalculated hourly, with more weight given to the most recent purchases.

This means BSR is highly sensitive to spikes. A single day of strong promotions can move a book from #80,000 to #2,000 overnight. Volatility is why single snapshots mislead — what matters is the BSR range a book holds consistently over time.

Pubscout tip: Use the BSR Trend chart on any product page to see the 30-day range. A book that holds #3,000–#8,000 consistently is far more useful data than one that spiked to #500 once.

Translating BSR into daily sales

Every category has a different sales-to-rank curve. Here are rough benchmarks for amazon.com Books:

BSR RangeEst. Daily SalesEst. Monthly Revenue*
#1 – #50050–300+$1,500–$9,000+
#500 – #3,00015–50$450–$1,500
#3,000 – #10,0005–15$150–$450
#10,000 – #50,0001–5$30–$150
#50,000 – #200,0000–1$0–$30

*Assumes $9.99 paperback at 60% royalty. Actual results vary by price, format, and category.

Category BSR vs subcategory BSR

Amazon shows BSR in the parent category (Books) and in up to three subcategories. A book ranked #150,000 in Books could simultaneously be #12 in “Knitting > Patterns”. For niche research, subcategory BSR is often more actionable — if the #1 book in your target subcategory has a Books BSR of #40,000, that niche has manageable volume and may be worth entering.

Common BSR misreads to avoid

  • Never judge a book on a single BSR snapshot — look at trend history
  • A high BSR on a brand-new book means nothing; it hasn’t had time to build velocity
  • BSR differences between marketplaces are not comparable — UK #5,000 ≠ US #5,000
  • Free Kindle downloads temporarily inflate BSR but don’t count as paid sales
  • BSR resets to a very high number if a book goes out of stock — not a sign of failure

Key takeaway: BSR is a signal, not a fact. Look for books holding a stable rank that implies 3–10 daily sales — that’s the sweet spot for a viable KDP niche.

Niche Research Framework for KDP Publishers

Finding a profitable KDP niche is a five-step process: identify a keyword category, validate demand, assess competition, model royalties, and confirm entry is realistic. Pubscout automates the data collection — here’s how to use it systematically.

Step 1 — Identify a candidate keyword

Start with a topic you know or suspect has demand: “anxiety journal”, “sudoku large print”, “affirmations for women”. Type it into Amazon’s search bar with Pubscout’s Keyword Expander active. You’ll see volume estimates and competition scores for the root keyword and related variations.

Look for keywords with volume scores above 60 and competition below 45 — searches happening regularly without an overwhelming wall of established books.

Step 2 — Read the Niche Snapshot

Run a search and read Pubscout’s Niche Snapshot bar above the results. Key numbers to evaluate:

  • Avg BSR — if the average across the top 20 results is below #50,000, real buying is happening
  • Entry Difficulty — below 40 is accessible, 40–65 is competitive, above 65 requires a strong angle
  • Avg Reviews — if top books all have 500+ reviews, you’re fighting for credibility from day one
  • Revenue range — look at the spread, not just the average; a few outliers can skew the mean

The ideal niche profile: Avg BSR under #30,000 · Entry Difficulty under 50 · At least one top-10 book with under 50 reviews earning $500+/month.

Step 3 — Analyse individual competitors

Click through to the 3–5 books appearing to earn the most. On each product page, Pubscout’s badge shows BSR trend, estimated monthly sales, and review velocity. Look for:

  • Books with consistent BSR earning $300–$800/month — these prove the niche converts
  • Recent books (last 12 months) in the top 10 — fresh entries can rank, the niche isn’t locked
  • Books with weak covers, thin descriptions, or no A+ content — beatable with quality
  • Review counts under 100 in top positions — low review barrier means a faster path to visibility

Step 4 — Model your royalty potential

Use the Revenue Calculator to model earnings at the BSR levels you’ve observed. Set your planned price, page count, and format, then drag the BSR slider to match the range the current top books hold. This gives you a realistic monthly revenue target before you write a single word.

Step 5 — Confirm entry is realistic

Ask three questions before committing: Can I produce a book meaningfully better than what’s ranking? Can I get 20+ reviews within 60 days through ARC readers or launch strategy? Is my primary keyword in the title in a way Amazon’s A9 will index? If yes to all three — publish.

Amazon SEO for Self-Publishers in 2025

Amazon’s A9 algorithm ranks books based on relevance and conversion probability. Understanding the eight signals Pubscout’s SEO Analyzer scores — and how to optimise each one — is the difference between a book that ranks and one that hides.

How A9 decides what to show

A9 is a two-stage system. First it filters for relevance: does this book’s metadata contain the words the customer searched? Second it ranks by conversion probability: of the relevant books, which are most likely to be purchased? Listings that convert well get shown more. More impressions mean more sales. It compounds.

The 8 signals Pubscout scores

SignalWeightWhat to optimise
Title keyword matchHighPrimary keyword in first 5 words
Subtitle / series fieldHighSecondary keyword + benefit phrase
Backend keywordsMedium7 fields × 50 chars, no repetition
Description qualityMediumA+ content, 600+ words, structured
Cover image qualityMediumHigh-res, readable at 150px thumbnail
Review velocityHighNew reviews in last 30 days
Review ratingMediumAbove 4.2 average
A+ / Editorial contentLowerBrand story, comparison modules

Title and subtitle — the highest leverage

Your title is the most heavily weighted indexing field. The format that consistently outperforms: Primary Keyword: Descriptive Subtitle That Includes Secondary Keyword. Avoid adjective padding (“Amazing”, “Ultimate”) — A9 doesn’t weight these and they waste character space.

Review velocity matters more than count

A book with 30 reviews all posted in the last 30 days will often outrank a book with 200 reviews posted 18 months ago. A9 treats recent reviews as a signal of current relevance. Maintaining a steady review acquisition strategy after launch — not just at it — is worth the effort.

Scoring 80+ in Pubscout’s SEO Analyzer: Title keyword match ✓ · A+ content description ✓ · 15+ reviews in last 60 days ✓ · 4.2+ average rating ✓. Fix these four and you’ll hit 80 in most niches.

Backend keywords: the invisible ranking factor

KDP gives you 7 keyword fields of up to 50 characters each. Rules: never repeat words already in your title or subtitle, use different variations and long-tail phrases, include common misspellings of your niche term, and never use competitor names (policy violation).

What A9 doesn’t care about

  • Price alone — affects conversion, but doesn’t directly boost rank
  • Historical sales volume — only recent velocity counts
  • Your author bio — not an indexing field
  • Categories alone — help discovery but don’t substitute for keyword indexing

KDP Royalty Rates Explained (2025)

KDP offers different royalty structures depending on format, price, and marketplace. Understanding how print costs interact with royalty percentages — and which format maximises your take-home — is essential before you set a price.

eBook royalties: 35% vs 70%

KDP eBooks offer two tiers. The 70% tier applies to books priced between $2.99 and $9.99 in supported marketplaces and enrolled in KDP Select. Books outside this range earn 35%. For most non-fiction and journals, staying in the 70% range is straightforward.

35% vs 70% in practice: A book priced at $1.99 earns $0.70 per sale at 35%. The same content at $2.99 earns $2.09 at 70% — 3× more revenue per sale for a $1 price increase.

Paperback royalties and print costs

Paperback royalties: (List Price × 60%) − Print Cost = Royalty per sale. The print cost for a standard 200-page black-ink 6×9 paperback on amazon.com is approximately $2.15–$3.25 depending on trim.

FormatPrint cost (200pp)Price needed to earn $3/sale
B&W Paperback 6×9~$2.15$8.59
B&W Paperback 8.5×11~$2.84$9.74
Colour Paperback 6×9~$7.00$16.67
Hardcover 6×9~$6.30$15.50

The minimum price trap

KDP enforces a minimum list price for paperbacks so your royalty stays above zero. The real trap is pricing just above the minimum — you’ll earn almost nothing per sale. Most successful KDP publishers price paperbacks between $8.99 and $14.99 depending on page count and niche expectations.

Marketplace differences

Royalties differ across marketplaces because print costs and currency vary. A book earning $3.20/sale on amazon.com might earn only £2.10 on amazon.co.uk — not just because of exchange rates but because UK print costs differ. Pubscout’s Revenue Calculator models all six marketplaces simultaneously.

Entry DifficultyComposite competition score 0–100Below 50 = enter
Top EarnerHighest estimated monthly revenueYour revenue ceiling

Understanding Entry Difficulty

Entry Difficulty (ED) estimates how hard it is for a new book to gain traction. It combines four weighted sub-scores:

  • Review barrier (35%) — how many reviews do top books have? More = harder to compete on social proof
  • Publisher dominance (25%) — are top positions owned by a few large publishers or spread across many self-publishers?
  • Listing age (25%) — are top books old and entrenched, or recent entries A9 is still testing?
  • Price compression (15%) — is there a race to the bottom squeezing margins for everyone?

ED score guide: 0–35 = low competition, strong opportunity · 36–55 = competitive but winnable · 56–75 = requires strong differentiation · 76–100 = avoid unless you have a significant moat.

When to override the score

ED is a starting signal, not a final verdict. A high-ED niche can still be worth entering if you have a unique format angle, a platform advantage, or a clear gap in the existing offers. Use the score to triage quickly — then manually review the top 5 books before deciding.

KDP Print Costs: Understanding Your Margins

Print cost is the biggest variable in KDP paperback royalty calculations. It’s determined by page count, ink type, and trim size — and getting it wrong at the design stage can mean earning almost nothing per sale even at a reasonable retail price.

How KDP calculates print cost

Formula: Print Cost = Fixed rate + (Per-page rate × page count)
Royalty = (List Price × 0.60) − Print Cost

The fixed and per-page rates differ by ink type. Black and white interior is the most affordable by a wide margin — colour printing is 4–5× more expensive per page and makes most low-to-mid priced books unprofitable.

Print cost by format (amazon.com)

Ink typeFixed costPer page200pp total
B&W Standard trim$0.85$0.012$3.25
B&W Large trim$1.00$0.012$3.40
Colour Standard$0.85$0.065$13.85
Premium B&W$1.00$0.017$4.40

The page count sweet spot

For a $9.99 paperback on amazon.com (B&W standard trim):

Page countPrint costRoyalty at $9.99
100 pages$2.05$3.95
150 pages$2.65$3.35
200 pages$3.25$2.75
300 pages$4.45$1.55
400 pages$5.65$0.35

Model before you design

The most common mistake is designing the book first and checking margins second. Always model your royalty in Pubscout’s Revenue Calculator before committing to a page count and format. Set a target royalty of $3+ per sale and work backwards to find what combination achieves it.

KDP Glossary

Essential terminology every Amazon KDP publisher should know.

BSR metric
Best Sellers Rank — Amazon’s hourly-updated sales velocity indicator. Lower = more recent sales. A rank of #5,000 in Books means this title outsells 99%+ of all books. Fluctuates significantly with promotions and restocks.
KDP platform
Kindle Direct Publishing — Amazon’s self-publishing platform for eBooks and print-on-demand paperbacks and hardcovers. Offers 35% or 70% eBook royalties and 60% paperback royalties minus print cost.
Print Cost metric
The per-unit manufacturing cost KDP deducts before calculating paperback royalties. Formula: Fixed base + (per-page rate × page count). Varies by ink type (B&W / colour / premium) and trim size (standard / large).
Entry Difficulty pubscout
Pubscout’s composite 0–100 score estimating how hard it is to rank in a niche. Combines review barrier (35%), publisher dominance (25%), listing age (25%), and price compression (15%). Below 50 = accessible.
Niche Snapshot pubscout
Pubscout’s real-time aggregate dashboard shown above search results. Displays avg BSR, daily sales, price, review count, total niche revenue, and Entry Difficulty — all derived from the top 20 visible results.
A9 Algorithm amazon
Amazon’s search ranking system. Filters results for keyword relevance first, then ranks by estimated conversion probability. Recent sales velocity, review recency, and listing completeness are the primary signals.
Review Velocity metric
The rate at which a book is accumulating new reviews. A9 weights recent reviews heavily — 30 reviews in the last 30 days can outrank a book with 200 reviews posted two years ago.
KDP Select program
Amazon’s 90-day renewable exclusivity program for eBooks. Unlocks the 70% royalty tier for prices outside $2.99–$9.99, Kindle Unlimited page reads, and promotional tools (free days, Countdown Deals).
A+ Content listing
Enhanced product description modules available to all KDP publishers — image carousels, text panels, comparison tables. Correlates with higher conversion rates and adds keyword-rich content Amazon can index.
BSR Trend pubscout
Pubscout’s 30-day BSR history chart on every product page. Shows the range a book holds over time rather than a single snapshot — far more reliable for estimating true average daily sales velocity.
Niche concept
A specific keyword category on Amazon with consistent buyer demand. A viable KDP niche: avg BSR below 50,000, Entry Difficulty below 55, at least one top-10 book with under 100 reviews earning $300+/month.
Expanded Distribution kdp
KDP option to distribute paperbacks via Ingram to bookshops, libraries, and retailers outside Amazon. Reduces royalty to 40% and requires a higher minimum price. Rarely worthwhile for most KDP self-publishers.

About Pubscout

We built the tool
we wished existed.

Pubscout was built by a small team of self-publishers who were tired of the tool-switching, spreadsheet-wrestling, and educated-guessing that defined niche research.

We wanted something that lived on Amazon — not alongside it. Something that turned a standard browse session into a research session without changing how you work.

That's Pubscout. A Chrome extension that makes every Amazon search smarter, every product page more transparent, and every niche decision more confident.

Speed above all

Research that takes 20 minutes in a spreadsheet should take 20 seconds in a search result. We optimise relentlessly for time-to-insight.

🎯

Data with context

Raw BSR numbers are useless without interpretation. Every metric we show comes with a signal — what it means and whether it's good for your niche.

🔒

Privacy-first

We don't store your browsing history, sell your data, or share your research with anyone. Your niches are yours.

📐

Honest accuracy

Sales estimates are models, not facts. We show confidence ranges, disclose our methodology, and update our calibration curves regularly.

Built by publishers, for publishers

The Pubscout team publishes on KDP. We use this tool every day to research, validate, and monitor our own books. When something breaks or a feature is missing, we feel it personally — that's the accountability that drives us.
