Amazon's A9 algorithm is time-weighted: recent sales count more than old sales. A book that sold 1,000 copies two years ago but is now selling 1 copy per week will have a much worse ranking than a new book that just sold 50 copies in the past 24 hours. This is why launch strategy matters so much — generating concentrated sales and page reads in the first 1–2 weeks of publishing creates a velocity spike that Amazon's algorithm registers as a strong relevance and popularity signal, establishing a ranking foundation that persists even as velocity naturally declines.
Common strategies for generating launch velocity include: an email list launch to existing readers, a limited-time promotional price ($0.99 or free) to drive volume, AMS (Amazon Marketing Services) ads targeted to your category, a BookBub or genre newsletter feature, and coordinated review requests to established advance readers. For KDP Select books, Free Book Promotion days can generate thousands of downloads in 24–48 hours, creating BSR movement even though free downloads contribute less to paid velocity than purchases do.
How does sales velocity affect BSR?
BSR is directly driven by sales velocity. The more copies a book sells in a short window, the lower (better) its BSR becomes. A BSR improvement reflects an increase in velocity relative to other books in that category. Sustained velocity keeps BSR low; declining velocity causes BSR to drift upward even if the book continues to sell.
Do free downloads count as sales velocity?
Free downloads contribute to Amazon's popularity metrics but are weighted less than paid purchases in A9's ranking signals. A free promotion can temporarily boost BSR and improve browse visibility, and the resulting page reads (for KU) or paid conversions after a discount period do count as real velocity.
Why do new books sometimes rank high immediately?
Amazon gives new books a "honeymoon period" where they're given slightly boosted placement in search results and browse categories shortly after publishing. This is designed to give new products a fair chance to generate initial velocity data. The honeymoon period typically lasts 30–90 days, which is another reason why a strong launch during this window is critical.
