How to Enroll Your Book in KDP Select

KDP Select gives your eBook access to Kindle Unlimited readers and promotional tools — in exchange for exclusivity. Here's how to enrol, manage your term, and opt out when needed.

Understand the exclusivity requirement

KDP Select requires that your eBook is not available in digital format anywhere else: not on Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play, Smashwords, or your own website. Print versions (paperback, hardcover) are exempt — they can be distributed anywhere.

Enrol during publication

During the KDP publishing process (Step 3: Rights and Pricing), look for the "KDP Select Enrolment" section. Check the box to enrol your book. Your first 90-day term begins when your book goes live.

Enrol an already-published book

From your KDP Bookshelf, find your eBook and click the "..." menu or "KDP Select Info" button. Look for the KDP Select section and click "Enrol". If you're currently distributed elsewhere, remove your book from those platforms first (changes can take 2–4 weeks to process — do this before enrolling).

Manage auto-renewal

KDP Select terms are 90 days and auto-renew unless you opt out. To opt out: go to your KDP Bookshelf, find the KDP Select enrolment section for your book, and uncheck "Automatically re-enrol this book in KDP Select". Do this before your term expires or you'll be locked in for another 90 days.

Use your promotional days

Each 90-day KDP Select term gives you 5 Free Book Promotion days and 1 Kindle Countdown Deal (7-day discount). Access these through your KDP dashboard under "Promote and Advertise" for your enrolled book.

Tips

  • If you're already on other platforms, give them 2–4 weeks to remove your title before enrolling in KDP Select — most platforms are not instant to remove.
  • To maximise your Free Book Promotion days, stack them with promotion submission sites (BookSirens, Freebooksy, Robin Reads) to maximise download volume during your free period.
  • You can check your KDP Select term expiry date from your Bookshelf at any time — look for the "Enrolled until [date]" text near the KDP Select option.

What happens if I violate KDP Select exclusivity?

Amazon can remove your book from KDP Select, suspend promotional benefits, or in serious cases take action against your account. If you accidentally published elsewhere, remove the book from other platforms immediately and contact KDP support to explain.

Can I leave KDP Select at any time?

You can opt out of auto-renewal at any time, but you must serve the remainder of your current 90-day term. You cannot leave mid-term. After opting out, once your term expires, you can publish your eBook on other platforms.
